Written by Michael Katz

The popularity of VPNs has risen out of people understanding the importance of using VPNs as well as appreciating the services they provide to the users. Awareness among people regarding online privacy and security is on the rise and the rise in demand and adoption of VPNs goes in tandem with it. Most VPN services were initially set up to support operating systems like Windows, Linux, and Mac-OS. However, since today’s man is heavily dependent on smartphones and tablets, there is the need to have VPNs for them as well. We tell you here in this article how to setup a VPN on android devices:

HideMyAss VPN

HideMyAss is one of the easiest to install and use VPNs that are out there in the market. It offers great online security and protection, along with good support as well as pricing. Their free plan is pretty good as well, which makes HMA Pro is one of the most widely used VPNs. You will need to download the HMA VPN app to set it up on your android device. Setting it up is a breeze and your experience with it is going to be full of satisfaction.

Integrated VPN

Although Android does not have integrated support for OpenVPN, it supports PPTP and L2TP/IPsec VPNs. This means that there is no need to install any third party application to use VPNs that run on these two protocols. All you need to do to connect to a VPN compatible to your device is:

  • Tap Settings > More (under Wireless and Networks) > VPN
  • Tap + and enter the details of the VPN you want to connect to. Your VPN will be added to the list
  • Connect to the VPN you set up using your credentials. You can also save the information during setup to avoid entering the details every time you want to connect to the VPN

OpenVPN

Android does not have integrated support for OpenVPN, so in order to use it users have to download a third-party app from the Play Store. There is the official app of OpenVPN on the Play Store, which users can download and install without rooting their device if it runs on Android 4.0 or higher. Otherwise, a phone root will be required to connect to an OpenVPN network. After downloading the app, you will be automatically connected to the VPN you want without having to worry about it.

Always –on Mode

You can download a VPN for Android easily, but you have to make sure that it is running on your phone so that you can reap the fruits of its services. Always-on VPN Mode is a feature offered by Android 4.2. When you enable this mode, no data will be shared unless you are connected to the VPN. This is a good method to protect your identity and data from attackers.

Conclusion

May people wonder about how to setup a VPN on android devices, but these methods can help you do so without a problem. VPNs are essential for your privacy and security of data while you are browsing the internet, so it is expected that you use the best VPN for your Android device. Finding that out required trying different VPNs, and all of them can be set up using the ways discussed in this article.
